Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting experience, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. At Maltese & Yorkie, we’re committed to not only providing you with a healthy puppy, but also helping you care for them every step of the way.
Here’s our simple guide to starting strong with your new furry family member.
Feeding & Nutrition
Good nutrition is the foundation of a healthy dog.
Food Type: Start with high-quality puppy food (we’ll share what your pup is currently eating).
Feeding Schedule: Puppies typically eat 3–4 small meals per day.
Fresh Water: Always provide clean, fresh water.
Avoid: Table scraps, chocolate, grapes, onions, and bones—these can be dangerous.
Tip: Gradually transition to new food over 5–7 days to avoid upset tummies.
Grooming Basics
Your puppy’s grooming needs depend on the breed, but here are general tips:
Bathing: Once every 3–4 weeks or as needed. Use gentle puppy shampoo.
Brushing: Regular brushing reduces shedding and keeps coats clean.
Nails: Trim nails every few weeks.
Ears & Eyes: Keep ears dry and clean. Wipe around eyes gently with a damp cloth if needed.
Exercise & Playtime
Puppies are bundles of energy! Give them outlets to stay fit and happy.
Walks: Short, safe walks after vaccinations.
Playtime: Mental and physical play helps reduce chewing and anxiety.
Training Games: Teach basic commands like “sit”, “stay”, and “come”.
Remember: Avoid intense exercise (like jumping or running stairs) in young puppies with developing joints.
Sleep & Crate Training
Puppies need 18–20 hours of sleep a day.
Create a cozy sleeping area or use a crate for bedtime.
Crate training promotes safety and makes potty training easier.
Be patient with nighttime whining—it’s normal at first.
Vet Visits & Preventative Care
Routine health checks keep your puppy on track.
Vaccinations: Follow a vet-approved schedule.
Parasite Control: Regular deworming and flea/tick preventatives.
Spaying/Neutering: Discuss the best time with your vet.
Microchipping: Highly recommended for safety and identification.
Socialization & Training
Early socialization shapes your puppy into a confident, well-behaved dog.
Expose them to new people, pets, and environments safely.
Positive reinforcement training works best.
Puppy classes can be a great way to learn and bond.
